South Pasadena Fire Station #20, designed by WJA, is on schedule to open May 13. Construction began in January of 2023 for this hurricane hardened structure built to withstand the most destructive of storms. This 11,770 sf building features 4 pull-through apparatus bays, 6 unisex dorm rooms, community/training room, fuel depot for both gasoline and diesel, full generator backup, fitness room and admin offices for the fire department.
Located in a coastal area required the raising of the site 8 ft on fill to ensure FEMA compliance. The building’s façade consists of decorative concrete block, stucco, and exposed, sealed concrete. Large overhangs on the high roof help to filter direct light through the clearstory windows and effectively reduce daytime energy consumption in both the living quarters and apparatus bay.
This station was designed to serve the community for 75+ years and create a healthy living environment for its occupants while remaining operational during catastrophic storm events.
WJA has been working alongside Biltmore Construction to complete this station. A great team dynamic contributed to the overall success of this project. The city and community are very excited for the grand opening.
